According to the Agriculture Census 2021, over 2,000 dairy farms have adopted a robotic milking system. That is more than 1 in 5 farms. This trend in Canada to choose robotics allows more flexibility in a farmer's day, cows like it, and robots are able to provide digital data and insight that observation of animals alone may not. Cows get to choose when and how often they get milked with the robot. Modern technology in milking equipment, like the robot, can collect a lot of information on the cow and the milk, and alert a farmer of any unusual behaviour from the cow, which helps detect potential illness and injury sooner. It does not replace humans, however; both a trained human eye and digital data are important tools when caring for cows.
